COURSE OVERVIEW
This course is only for physicians who are on payroll or
affiliated, and credentialed by Kings County Hospital Center.
Moderate sedation and analgesia is frequently administered to patients
in settings outside of the operating suite. Non-anesthesia staff who
administer moderate sedation and analgesia to adult patients must
be knowledgeable of the current hospital policies and guidelines governing
administration of moderate sedation and analgesia and be competent
to:
-
assess whether a patient is an appropriate
candidate for moderate sedation and analgesia.
-
administer drugs to achieve the desired
level of sedation and analgesia.
-
monitor patients to maintain the desired
level of sedation and analgesia.
-
detect and manage a compromised airway.
-
ensure adequate oxygenation and ventilation.
-
rescue a patient should impairment
of cardiac and respiratory function occur.
This course is intended to provide a review of important standards for
administering moderate sedation and analgesia and guidelines for treating,
managing and monitoring patients in a non-operating room setting.
Participants will also be required to view a training video available through
the Kings County Hospital Center Department of Anesthesia. Completion
of this education does not grant the privilege to administer moderate
sedation and anesthesia.
NO PROVIDER can perform moderate sedation unless he or she:
- has received formal training in performing moderate sedation and
anesthesia.
- has obtained the privilege and is officially credentialed to perform
the procedure.
- is currently ACLS certified.
Eligible providers must contact Medical Board Office and apply for the
privilege to administer moderate sedation and anesthesia. This privilege
can only be granted by the HHC governing body. Before applying for
the privilege, the provider must be ACLS certified.
